Haiku - Cornwall Inspiration

Cornwall - United Kingdom

I love Cornwall. It is a place of great diversity, strange customs, superstitions, romantic legends, and even Arthurian myths. Its magnificent coastline has been unrelentlessly shaped by the elements. There is so much to experience. Its contorted rocks, precipitous cliffs, deep estuaries, smuggler's coves, picturesque villages, harbours and beaches, etc. No wonder it provides endless inspiration for artists, writers, musicians, poets, and as always, in my case, haiku.

Haiku cannot be forced. It requires space and energy to enable it to emerge naturally, and that is what Cornwall does for me. Here is another collection of haiku inspired by my seven-day trip in September 2011. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

excited again

exploring familiar ground

going to the beach

the real bench mark

keeping a watch on nature

come and sit on me

autumn in cornwall

surely paradise on earth

restoring ones soul

a natural harbour

sheltering my emotions

short term solution

pen poised and ready

numbers jumping on the page

sudoku morning

a new perspective

everyone should see the sea

from inside their home

keeping tradition

potato at kynance cove

always delicious

watching the coastline

world war forgotten bunker

protecting our shores

A Double Haiku

moving with the tide

submerged never to return

underneath the sea

it was full of bounce

now that time has long gone past

deflated beach ball

glorious contrasts

waiting for artists to paint

black sky silver spume

what do the cows think

of the bellowing fog horn

they don’t seem to mind

uniformity

get your seagulls in a row

forget about ducks

my earthy lady

partly submerged in it all

green looks good on you

the jigsaw pattern

underneath before it breaks

waving endlessly

bamboo bending art

paint the landscape with motion

amongst the heather

art is everywhere

wind blowing up a pattern

moving in the corn

where do you come from

inevitable question

where are you going

walking on the beach

a hint of sun exposes

me and my shadow

the sound of a lion

loudly as the waves crash in

i can hear it roar

reaching for the sky

communication remnant

naked totem pole

I do not know about Cornwall but I loved your haikus. My favorite is:

Hi Judi, please give it a go. You might surprise yourself, it's wonderfully simple and if that poet is within you it's an easy way to release it. Regards, Russ

Hi Russ...Are you sure that beached ball isn't the long lost Wilson, Tom Hanks' buddy in " Cast Away "..?

Reaching for the sand...

Home at last, My journey done...

Come, Child...Lets play...

As usual, reading your haiku out loud gave me great pleasure this morning...How I miss the sea and the wild northern California coast, not unlike your beautifully rugged Cornwall...

You and your shadow kept wonderful company with the tides ebb and flow...Does not the ocean speak to you in a language only a poet knows..? Thank you, once again, my friend, for giving me this haiku treasure to share with my world...Larry

Hi Larry, if you look closely at the pic, you will see the ball just under the water (towards the top in the middle of the photograph). It's red, yellow and blue so it's not Wilson but could be a relative.

Yes, the ocean does speak to me as I suspect it does to you too. Thank you for your comments and delightful haiku! Go well my friend. Russ

This is really really beautiful! A wonderful blend of poetry, pictures and the imagination! Loved the earthly lady, the beach ball and the shadow. And above all the strange delightful mix of scenes, emotions and realizations!

Awesome presentation! And Cornwall...it was one of the first places I wanted to visit as a child, also was a huge Arthurian geek.

Hi Veronwe, thank you, comments from you are really appreciated. You have an eye for depth and meaning and you obviously 'get it'. You see beyond the simple poem to the provoked realisations very quickly. That's why your work is so good and why I respect your feedback. Thank you.
